For the first time in over 18 years, the Division of Power (DOP) requested approval from the Columbus City Council to increase city power rates for all customers. The increase was needed due to rising energy costs, and the need to reinvest in the city’s aging power distribution system to help maintain reliable service. Improvements are also planned for the city’s street lighting system.
Despite the rate change, our customers will still have some of the lowest monthly bills on average, and prompt restoration service, compared to other utilities.

The Division of Power has not had a rate increase in over 18 years. Meanwhile, costs to provide safe, reliable energy have risen sharply. In addition, aging infrastructure will need major improvements to effectively serve customers. Ultimately, this requires adequate funding.
The increase will allow us to improve our aging power system, and decrease how often and how long power outages happen. Streetlight, circuit and other equipment upgrades are also planned. January 1, 2025. A citizen utility board will review any future rate adjustments each year.
Yes. Starting January 1, 2025, we now offer a low income discount program. Those who qualify will get a 25% discount off their energy usage and a one-time $50 credit on their bill in 2025. Seniors 60+ who qualify for that program, will also have their service charges waived (about $11.25 a month). Visit columbus.gov/payassist to learn more and apply today.
