The ABCs of Safe Sleep for Babies

Every parent wants their baby to sleep soundly and safely. But with so much information out there, it can be confusing to know the best practices. Here at CelebrateOne, we're committed to empowering parents with the knowledge they need to raise healthy babies. That's why we're focusing on the ABCs of Safe Sleep – a simple yet critical guideline for keeping your little one safe at night.

A – Alone
Your baby should always sleep alone, on their own sleep surface. This means no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or other loose items in the crib. These items can increase the risk of suffocation or overheating.

B – Back
The safest position for babies to sleep in is on their back. This reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related deaths.

C – Crib
Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet that hugs the mattress snugly. Avoid using crib bumpers, sleep positioners and wedges, as these can also increase the risk of suffocation.

Additional Tips for Safe Sleep:

  • Breastfeeding is Best: Breastfeeding can help reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Keep it Cool: Avoid overheating your baby. Dress them in lightweight clothing and keep the room temperature comfortable but not too warm.
  • Smoke-Free Zone: Never smoke around your baby or allow anyone else to do so. Secondhand smoke increases the risk of SIDS and other health problems.
  • Supervised Tummy Time: While back sleeping is safest for nighttime sleep, supervised tummy time during the day is important for your baby's development.
  • Routine Matters: Establish a consistent bedtime routine to help your baby learn to sleep well.

Remember: Every baby is different and some may not sleep through the night right away. Be patient and consistent with your safe sleep practices. If you have any concerns about your baby's sleep, talk to your pediatrician.
