2. Bluefield Drive Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: This Far South neighborhood project will replace water lines that break often to improve service. Construction is expected to begin in 2025. Advance notice will be mailed to residents in the project area with detailed information and contacts.

This project will be constructed as part of the Division of Water’s (DOW) Replacement and Rehabilitation (R&R) Program. The water line project area is located in the Far South neighborhood (see map(PDF, 537KB)). The goal of this project is to replace the existing 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch water lines that have a high break frequency. Replacement of these water lines will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss.  

The project will include approximately 10,500 linear feet of water line replacement. The existing water mains are 80+ years in age and range from 6-inches to 12-inches in diameter. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

Prior to construction, the Neighborhood Liaison will be contacted and informed of the project. Further community outreach may result though the Neighborhood Liaison Program.  Notification letters will also be mailed out in advance to residents located near the project area. These letters will provide detailed information regarding the project and important contact numbers.

DOW plans to fund this project with a below market-rate loan through the Ohio EPA’s Water Supply Revolving Loan Account (WSRLA) Program. Prior to granting this loan, the Ohio EPA required a detailed submittal from the Division of Water to determine the project’s eligibility for the program.

3. Athens Avenue and Rumsey Road Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: Located in the Greater Hilltop and Far South(PDF, 620KB), this project will replace water mains that break often and install new fire hydrants. Construction is expected to begin in Spring of 2025 and end in Spring of 2026. Prior to construction, area residents will be notified and provided with contacts.

4. Atlanta Drive Area Water Line Improvements

The goal of this project is to replace existing 6-inch and 8-inch water mains that have a high break frequency with new Ductile Iron and/or PVC mains. Replacement of these water mains will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss. 

The project will include approximately 10,075 linear feet of water main replacement. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers.

Construction is expected to begin in the Summer of 2024 and end in the Fall of 2025.

Prior to construction, the Neighborhood Liaisons will be contacted and informed of the project. Further community outreach may result though the Neighborhood Liaison Program. 5. Elizabeth Ave Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: This project will replace water lines that break often and add new fire hydrants. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2024 and end in the spring of 2025. Advance notice will be mailed to residents in the project area with detailed information and contacts.

This project will be constructed as part of the Division of Water’s (DOW) Replacement and Rehabilitation (R&R) Program. The water line project is the Mid-East Area (see map(PDF, 499KB)). 

The goal of this project is to replace existing 6-inch and 8-inch water mains that have a high break frequency with new water mains. Replacement of these water mains will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss. 

The project will include approximately 9,500 linear feet of water main replacement. This project will also abandon existing and redundant 2-inch water mains with high break frequency. Along with the abandonment of old water mains and installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. 

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2024 and end in the spring of 2025.

Prior to construction, the Neighborhood Liaisons will be contacted and informed of the project. Further community outreach may result though the Neighborhood Liaison Program. 6. Miller Ave Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: Located in downtown, Near East, and Near South areas, this project will replace water lines that break often; new fire hydrants are also included. Area residents will receive notice prior to construction, which is expected to begin in early 2024 and be completed by the end of 2025.

The project will include approximately 8,000 linear feet of water main replacement. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin early in 2024 and be completed by the end of 2025.

7. Lee Ellen Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: Located in the South Side, this project will replace water lines that break often and add new fire hydrants. Construction is expected to begin in winter 2023 and end in spring 2025. Prior to construction, notice will be sent to area residents with details and contacts.

8. Riverview Drive Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: Located in the North Linden, Northeast, Clintonville and Olentangy West communities, this project will replace water lines that break often to improve service and add more fire hydrants. Construction is expected to begin in the winter of 2023/2024 and end by the spring of 2025. Notice will be provided to area residents prior to construction.

The goal of this project is to replace existing 1.5-inch, 2-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch water mains that have a high break frequency with new 2-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch ductile iron, or PVC, ones. Replacement of these water mains will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss.

The project will include approximately 8,481 linear feet of water main replacement. The existing water mains range from 66 to 96 years in age. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in the winter of 2024 and end by the spring of 2025.

9. Enhanced Meter Project

Announcement: The department announced in mid-August that due to a change in subcontractors, all appointments for our Enhanced Meter Project scheduled after August 16, 2024 will be cancelled. When the new subcontractor for Sensus (our primary contractor) is on board, customers will be contacted to reschedule the installation of their new meter. Summary: This project will facilitate collection of electronic meter readings and provide expanded services for customers. It will be completed in phases, to begin in 2023.

City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities
The Department of Public Utilities has approximately 300,000 water meters in Columbus and contracting communities and 17,000 Columbus power meters. The Enhanced Meter Project (EMP) will allow both the Division of Water (DOW) and the Division of Power (DOP) to collect electronic meter readings and provide expanded services for customers. This project will result in enhanced customer service, improved operational efficiency and increased meter accuracy.

Following project development and a pilot project testing phase, installations began in 2023 and will continue for the next few years, area by area. Customers will be notified by mail when contractors are beginning in their area. Contact and scheduling information will be included.

Financing for the EMP is being provided thanks to a below-market rate loan through the OEPA’s Water Supply Revolving Loan Account (WSRLA) Program.

10. Brixham Road Area Water Line Improvements

Summary: This project will replace water mains that break often (and are 70 years old) to improve service, and will add new fire hydrants. Construction should begin in the summer of 2023. Prior to this, letters will be mailed to nearby residents with important contacts and info.

The project will include approximately 8,945 linear feet of water main replacement. The existing water mains are approximately 70 years in age. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers.

It includes about 8,650 linear feet of water mains and new fire hydrant installations. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2023. Prior to that, area residents will be notified with detailed information and contacts.

Summary: This Hilltop area project will replace water lines that break often to improve water service and and reduce water loss. It includes about 9,000 linear feet of new water lines, new fire hydrants, and water service transfers. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2023.

Summary: This project in the Livingston Avenue Community Area will replace water mains that break often with new 8-inch Ductile Iron ones to improve service and reduce water loss. It includes ~5,400 linear feet of new water mains, new fire hydrants, and water service transfers. Prior to construction (begins in the winter of 2022/2023), notice will be mailed to area residents with detailed info and contacts.

The Kent-Fairwood Area Water Line Improvements project will be constructed as part of the Division of Water’s Replacement and Rehabilitation (R&R) Program. The water line project is located in the Livingston Avenue Community Area (see map below). The goal of this project is to replace existing 1.5-Inch, 2-Inch, 6-inch and 8-inch water mains that have a high break frequency with new 8-inch Ductile Iron ones. Replacement of these water mains will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss. 

The project will include approximately 5,400 linear feet of water main replacement. The existing water mains are 92 years in age. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in the winter of 2022/2023.

It includes ~9,500 linear feet of water line replacement, new water mains, fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2024; prior to this, notice will be sent to area residents providing detailed info and contacts.

16. Manchester Ave Water Line Improvements

Summary: Located in North Linden, this project will replace the existing lines that break often & are close to exceeding their useful life (some ~100 yrs old) to improve service and reduce water loss. Construction is expected to begin in winter of 2022; prior to that, notice will be sent to residents with detailed info and important contacts.

Part of the Division of Water’s (DOW) Replacement and Rehabilitation (R&R) Program, this project is located in the North Linden neighborhood (see map(PDF, 412KB)). The goal is to replace the existing 8-inch, 6-inch, and 2-inch water lines that are close to exceeding their useful life and have a high break history. Replacement of these water lines will improve water service, decrease burden on water maintenance operations, and reduce water loss.

The project will include approximately 3,220 linear feet of water line replacement. The existing water mains are close to 100 years old and vary from 2-inches to 8-inches in diameter. Along with the installation of new water mains, the project will also include new fire hydrant installations and water service transfers. Construction is expected to begin in winter of 2022.
