MORE INFO:
Because the practice of keeping and raising domestic farm animals requiring a permit in Columbus has increased the past five years and there has been an increasing number of complaints, Columbus Public Health has proposed changes to the rules that will protect public health, safety and animal welfare.

Proposed changes include spacing requirements for animals and an annual permit renewal and inspection. These changes would affect any individual or business that currently owns, keeps, harbors, sells, trades or exhibits domestic animals that need a permit in the City of Columbus. The changes also include all current permits.

The major change from previous standards includes a requirement to renew the permit annually and pay a permit fee. However, as long as a current permitted setup is not causing issues related to public health, safety or animal welfare/cruelty, current permittees will be grandfathered and not required to change their setup design or how many animals have been permitted.

Domestic animals that need a permit include alpaca, bison, camel, caribou, cattle, deer, elk, goat, horse, llama, moose, mule, ox, pig, pony, reindeer, sheep, water buffalo, and bird or fowl kept outside. Dogs, cats, ferrets and other common domestic animals do not require a permit through Columbus Public Health. The proposed changes will not regulate dangerous or wild animals which will continue to be regulated by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
