Flood Awareness
In Franklin County, floods rank as the third biggest hazard to residents. Some floods develop slowly, while others can develop in just a few minutes.
According to Ready.gov, flooding can be a hazard no matter where you live or work, but especially if you are in low-lying areas, near water, behind a levee or downstream from a dam.
Even very small streams, gullies, creeks, culverts, dry streambeds or low-lying ground that appear harmless in dry weather can flood.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles.
- Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear.
- Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
- When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice…”turn around…don’t drown.”
