Green Columbus Fund Overview

Brownfield Assessment
The City will consider applications for environmental site assessment (ESA) on property that meets the Ohio Brownfield definition. This includes Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, as well as a special category called Physical Phase II that allows corrective action to remove storage tanks and asbestos. Brownfield grant funding is on a reimbursement basis up to a project maximum of $200,000. Assessment funding has made it possible for several businesses to proceed directly to redevelopment. In some cases it has provided the analysis that led to successful applications for Clean Ohio remediation funds.

Green Buildings
The purpose of this component of the program is to encourage businesses and nonprofits to build or renovate in a green and sustainable manner. This is done by reimbursing the fee that the builder pays to achieve LEED Certification, as well as to provide specified performance based incentives. The City has awarded grants for the following LEED rating systems: New Construction and Major Renovation (NC); Core and Shell (CS); Commercial Interior (CI); and Existing Building – Operations and Maintenance (EB). The program also includes multi-family residential within the central portion of Columbus, both through LEED for Homes and in partnership with the AEP and Columbia Gas ENERGY STAR® New Homes Program.
